Sebastian Copeland was born on 3 April 1964, the son of conductor Jean-Claude Casadesus, director of the Lille National Philharmonic Orchestra. British-French-American, he graduated from UCLA in 1987 and began his career in New York directing music videos and commercial work before moving into professional photography — shooting fashion, advertising, album covers and celebrity portraiture, with studio credits including promotional imagery for The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Pirates of the Caribbean and Seabiscuit. Two trips to Antarctica in 2006 and 2007 changed the direction of his career entirely. Since 1999 he has led 27 expeditions to the polar regions, combining fine art photography with genuine physical exploration and environmental advocacy in a way few photographers attempt, and he continues to publish, exhibit and lecture on the polar world he has spent more than two decades documenting.
